#30DayMapChallenge

We make maps, lots of maps and we make maps matter.  Our maps provide insight and information to help decision makers working in fragile and complex places. 

 

We were happy to join in the 2023 #30DayMapChallenge.   Here are our maps. 

2023 Map Challenge

Day 1

Points

Theme:

We pinpointed locations of compounds which were affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan.

Day 2

Lines

Theme:

Our team mapped four different canals affected by the collapse of the Kakhovka dam in Ukraine.

Day 3

Polygons

Theme:

This map shows the change in crop diversity, in Afghanistan, compared to the year before.

Day 4

A Bad Map

Theme:

This map is not just a bad map, it's a terrible one! Some think that Africa is a country, not a continent.

Day 5

Analog Map

Theme:

A member of our team drew a map of Europe from memory, it' pretty accurate right?

Day 6

Asia

Theme:

We compared the levels of impact on agricultural and urban areas following a Pakistani flood.

Day 7

Navigation

Theme:

We navigated down the river Wey on kayaks. At the end we had biscuits and tea!

Day 8

Africa

Theme:

This map compares the before and after of our investigation into undocumented huts in Uganda.

Day 9

Hexagons

Theme:

We mapped cultivation changes in crops throughout a province in Afghanistan using hexagons.

Day 10

North America

Theme:

Our team visited San Diego in July 2023. Whilst there, we did some exploring…

Day 11

Retro

Theme:

In 1842, the British left Kabul. On January 6th, they began their retreat, leaving destruction behind.

Day 12

South America

Theme:

Following an eruption of a volcano, our team created an interactive map to show its impact.

Day 13

Choropleth

Theme:

This chloropleth map links Donbas population and duration under Russian control.

Day 14

Europe

Theme:

Our team created a map to show the levels of air quality and elevation in the United Kingdom.

Day 15

OpenStreetMap

Theme:

We used OpenStreetMap to locate huts, schools, roads in Uganda, and calculated distances between them.

Day 16

Oceania

Theme:

This map provides a hotspot analysis of erosion rates forTimor-Leste, located in Oceania.

Day 17

Flow

Theme:

This map shows the production and trade links of the ephedra drug, in Afghanistan.

Day 18

Atmosphere

Theme:

Rainfall is vital to Earth's atmospheric water cycle. This map visualises rainfall in Afghanistan.

Day 19

5-minute map

Theme:

Members of the team recorded their movements for five minutes, look at us go!

Day 20

Outdoors

Theme:

This map shows Pedro (an enthusiastic dog) making his rounds of the great outdoors.

Day 21

Raster

Theme:

We visualised our geospatial analysis of farmers and their levels of livelihoods in Afghanistan.

Day 22

North is not always up

Theme:

A member of our team mapped three magnetic north poles to show that North isn't always up.

Day 23

3D

Theme:

A simple map with countries beginning with 'D' extruded. .......with ESRI's basemaps...

Day 24

Black & white

Theme:

In black and white, this map depicts declining water levels post-Kakhovka dam attack.

Day 25

Antarctica

Theme:

A member of our team looked into different ice concentrations from 2015-2100 in Antarctica.

Day 26

Minimal

Theme:

This is a very minimal map of the world, and a pin showing where Alcis is based.

Day 27

Dot

Theme:

On a map of Kansas, we placed a dot for each woman named Dorothy. There's no place like home!

Day 28

Is this a chart or a map?

Theme:

A member of our team recorded a surf session to show the transition from map to a nautical chart.

Day 29

Population

Theme:

We looked at the population of Lamogi, Uganda, and created a map showing different distances.

Day 30

"My favorite.."

Theme:

For the final day of this map challenge, we voted for our favorite map, and we chose this infographic.
