The situation in Afghanistan

We continue to follow events in Afghanistan very closely and are here to help and support those who need it as much as we can.  Our Managing Director, Richard Brittan, has shared this update on LinkedIn (24/08/2021)

UK Guidance. The UK Government have now published a webpage providing guidance on its support for British and non-British nationals in Afghanistan. This is new and those wishing to travel to the UK should continue to monitor this page in particular for news of updates to the UK’s schemes.  Details :https://www.gov.uk/guidance/support-for-british-and-non-british-nationals-in-afghanistan

UK’s Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP).
The UK’s Foreign Secretary agreed to ‘visa waivers’ for 200 Afghan journalists who worked with the British media after an appeal by a coalition of British newspapers and broadcasters: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/aug/22/afghan-journalists-win-right-to-come-to-britain-after-media-appeal.  This comes the day after Afghan security guards employed by Garda World were granted the right to come to the UK and the BBC reported that the UK Government is now ‘looking at other Afghans that may have worked for other contractors’. It is hoped that ARAP will be further expanded to cover other categories of sub-contractors.

The Home Office have said that those eligible can as well apply to the scheme from outside Afghanistan if they're now in another country. https://twitter.com/ukhomeoffice/status/1429167634717806595

 UK Afghan citizens’ resettlement scheme.
The UK’s Home Secretary told Sky News that the scheme could be expanded to admit double the initial figure for the first year. “There could be up to 10,000. We are expanding categories of people,” she said. This is significant as it indicates a greater commitment from the UK Government to get more people out faster and importantly from a wider set of categories! This is very good news!!

The scheme is not yet open however the helpline is now live: 0044 (0)2475 389980. It is available 09.30 to 23.00 this weekend and 24/7 from Monday 9am onwards. I am aware of two who made it through, after very long waits, and have registered their details and those of their family members and will now be triaged through it. We have no idea how long this might take. Details: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/afghan-citizens-resettlement-scheme
