Alcis has been working in Afghanistan for more than 15 years. Through the projects we work on, it became clear that reliable and up-to-date data showing where the population is and in what numbers, simply did not exist.
Officially recognised and unofficial sources of population data contained huge discrepancies and errors. Computer generated population models were seen to be not necessarily representative.
Driven by a lack of standard quality data, organisations have been using old and inappropriate ‘village’ datasets to plan projects, implement surveys or evaluate the impact, when in reality, the people did not exist where the data showed them.
It was clear to Alcis that this situation was jeopardising the success of these interventions. We realised that in order for organisations to develop effective plans, implement worthwhile projects and measure impact on real beneficiaries, it was essential that reliable data about the population existed.
In 2014 we completed a country wide exercise to map the location of every residential compound from high resolution aerial imagery, the result is the Alcis Settlement Data. In 2019 the complete data set was refreshed.
